Large PAIR shapely Chinoiserie decorated, black lacquered and gilt japanned rectangular baluster-form ceramic urns now mounted as lamps. All beautifully decorated with exotic oriental scenes and motifs.
Oriental exoticism is a recurring 19th century theme in the decorative arts. Reinforced at the International Universal Exposition in Paris in 1845, the Chinese Tea Salon caused quite a sensation and was copied and adapted in room decoration with faux bamboo suites and japanned items created for Fontainebleau, a number of English country houses, as well as the homes of artists, poets, and the stylish set.
